Tweet Support

I've been having the worst week with my migraines, and I was home sick again from work yesterday with a real head banger. I was farting around on the computer trying to distract myself from my pain when I logged onto Twitter. "Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

I've been playing with Twitter on and off, trying to get the hang of it, but I never realized until yesterday what a great support system it can be for Migraineurs.

There are other Migraineurs on there and you can talk to them in real time about what's going on with your migraines, like how you can be nauseous and hungry at the same time or learn of a great post about Headache on the Hill from Megan at Free My Brain From Migraine Pain.

So if you're on Twitter, can you please follow me at Migraine Chickie Twitter. Maybe we can build up a Twitter support group for Migraineurs.

Insomnia Blues

I had the worst insomnia blues last night. I had stayed home from work with a bad migraine. It was a "fire in the hole" type day. I went through several bags of ice and I was considering giving myself a Pedro haircut from Napoleon Dynamite to see if that might help. (Thank you to my Twitter friends for their support)

At bed time around 10 p.m., I actually feel asleep for an hour, but then my pain woke me back up. It would not let me get back to sleep. In addition, my ears were ringing quite bad, like a dozen crickets singing in my ears. Not only was my brain hurting, but it was giving me weird sensations as well, like snakes moving in my skull.

I tried every trick in my "get to sleep" book, like Tylenol PM, warm milk, chamomile tea, counting sheep, and trying to only concentrate on my breathing. I ended up watching tv all night with my cat staring at me like "what the hell are you doing up" expression on his face. Finally, I got another hour of sleep around 6 a.m.

Does anyone have any other tricks to get to sleep when you're dealing with this type of pain?

Art Museum Success

Over the weekend, I made another attempt with an art museum, which turned out pretty good. This time, I went with a friend to the Toledo Art Museum, and I didn’t have a big migraine flair up while I was there.

I think it is because it is a smaller museum. What are really nice are the smaller galleries, the mute lighting and the darker colored walls. Even the contemporary galleries didn’t send me for a loop. They didn’t have many of those big installation pieces.

A security guard chided me though. At the front desk, I asked if it was all right to take pictures. The staff told me I could take pictures with no flash, but in the contemporary galleries, the guard came after me for taking a picture. Apparently, there is some rule about copyright, and the notice is posted in tiny signs on the door jams. How are you supposed to notice those?

I stopped taking pictures, but I let my camera hang from my strap around my wrist as I pursued the rest of the galleries. It was making the guard so twitchy as he kept following me around. Finally, I just stuck my freaking camera in my purse so he would calm down, and he finally left me alone!

New Collage Blog

I've decided to create a new second blog, but this one is going to be about my collages. It's called Migraine Chick Collages. Not the greatest name, but it's the best I could come up with limited brain power with a migraine. If anyone can up come with a better name, let me know.

Lately, I've been checking out artistic blogging, and I know I'm such a beginner in this area, but everyone has to start somewhere right?? Hopefully, my new blog will help me become a better collage artist.

Migraine Fog

I've been having the worst problem losing stuff lately. Migraine fog is taking over my life. I've lost four pairs of gloves this winter season. They just seem to disappear on me. One minute I have them. The next minute, I don't, and I have no idea what I did with them.

Now, I've lost my favorite pair of sunglasses, which took me ages to find. They were the right darkness and the right fit. I've had to go rummaging through my "not so right" collection to find a pair to wear until this weekend. I'm dreading going shopping for them, too. If I find a pair I like, I think I'm going to buy two pairs so I can have a backup pair.

I'm about ready to cover myself in Velcro tape and wear a dozen carabiners on my belt so I can keep my stuff with me. Is anyone else losing stuff like me?

Migraines In The Attic-A Gothic Tale

Here is my latest collage. I found the picture of the sisters at an antique store, and I recently saw the movie "flowers in the attic." So I tried to come up with a story for the girls. There is a group on flickr that has artwork with stories that I really like.

Here is the story that I came up with so far.

"Grandmother always locked us in the attic whenever we got a migraine. She couldn't tolerate seeing anyone sick and she said the darkness might do us some good."

Valentine Chicken

It's quite hard to find a Valentine Chicken. This one is the best one I could find. Happy Valentine's Day!

Migraine Barbie and Her Drugs

I was organizing my photographs on Flickr when I noticed that my photograph Migraine Barbie and Her Drugs had like 1925 hits! Usually, my stuff gets around a hundred hits or so, but not this like this. I'm wondering what is making her so popular. I knew she was making the rounds on Facebook for a while. I just hope this picture is helping with migraine awareness.

New Migraine Haiku!

I don't know why I keep writing migraine haiku, but they just keep popping in my head! I quite like the one with the gnomes. Which is your favorite??

Head hurts everyday
Broken record, sad, sad song
Getting on my nerves

Every time I scream
Inside my head, banshee loud
The world never quakes

Gnomes creep to my bed
With sticks and stones and toadstools
Bash me on the head

A day out in pain
Shield my eyes, the sun too bright
Don’t take my picture

Fighting back the tears
I don’t want to start to cry
Hate the migraine blues

Bed Skills

This isn’t what you think. The other morning, when I called sick into work, I was just thinking about all the skills that I have learned since being in bed so much with my migraines. I'm not sure that these are skills you can use in the average work place, but they sure come in handy when you're home sick!

Michigan Bed Sloth-I’m learning that I can be a creature who can lay motionless in bed at times for so long that moss could grow on my butt.

Making the bed-this one I’m a little ashamed about, but I hate the covers being messy, even when I’m bed, so I’ve learned to make the bed while I’m in it.

Cat and Mouse-I’ve learned to play several games with my cat while I’m in bed all day, such as fetch, etc…

In The Dark Speed Dialing-I’ve learned to speed dial my phone in the morning in the complete dark so I can call into sick to work without even looking at the buttons.

Do you have any Chronic Pain Bed Skills that you've learned???

More Migraine Nation Stuff

Here is some more stuff that's happened since I've last posted.

1) I was scammed by Wellsphere. If you haven't heard about this, check out this article by Dr. Val. How The Health Blogosphere Was Scammed. I did ask Wellsphere to remove my account and all my blog posts, and they accommodated me quickly. I've also added a Creative Commons badge to my blog.

2) I've learned we are having a shift bid at work. It used to be based on seniority, but now it's based mostly on performance. I have dropped way down the list(on the order to bid) because of my performance which is affected by my having chronic daily migraines. If I didn't have migraines, I know I would be way up on the list. So now it looks like I'm going to get a crummy shift, which is probably going to make my migraines worse. My employer doesn't care. They are all about the numbers right now.

3) I'm bummed because one of my good friends on Myspace has disappeared without a trace, and I'm worried about her.

4) Today in The Detroit News, there is an article about the state governor wanting to kill the state fair funding. State Fair in jeopardy. I love the state fair. It is one of my highlights of the summer, and I love it so much that I brave it even with migraines!
