Pets and Migraines

I’ve been meaning to write a year-end round up about my Migraines in 08 and what my Migraine Plan is for the coming year, but then my hamster died over the holidays and it’s totally derailed my intentions.

It’s amazing how even a little hamster can make a difference in your life, especially when you have a chronic illness. Pets are so important. They don’t judge you. They always listen. They are happy to see you with or without a Migraine. They accept you for who you are.

I think hamsters are a good Migraine Sufferer’s pet. They are quiet. They are not high maintenance. It doesn’t take much to make them happy. They each have a distinctive little personality. They are not too stinky. In addition, if you keep a hamster, you are rescuing them from the clutches of possibly evil children, who might not appreciate them like you do.

I was trying to think what makes the best pet for someone with Migraines, but it is so subjective. My cat and my guinea pig seem to fit the bill for me, and so did my little ham. What do you think makes the best pet for Migraineurs?

I'm sorry for your loss. Funny how those little hams wiggle their way into our hearts, isn't it?

I'm sorry about your hamster. I agree about the difference a pet can make in your life. My basset hound and my cat are good pets for me because they both enjoy napping, but I also appreciate the times when I'm forced to get up and tend to them. Otherwise I might end up wallowing too long in migraine despair.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Pets are so dear.

I love my Japanese fighting fish (or betta), and I think he's a perfect pet. He's good and quiet, he's contained (couldn't wake me up when I'm sleeping if he tried) and man oh man is he ever excited to see me.

A great topic for sure :)

I'm so sorry you're missing your little ham. I love those little guys too. Oh, fish are so wonderful, relaxing and quiet. Kitties are so soft and their purring relaxes me. Doggies are so loyal and intuitive they make me feel loved even when I am at my most unlovable. My horses are outdoors, always waiting for me to come and visit, and if I can't, they're happy just being near the house where they know I am staying. They give me something beautiful to look at thru the window when I'm sick, and they give me hope.

Best pet? How can I choose?

You are right that best-pet is subjective. My cavalier king charles spaniel is a devoted little guy that naps with me and is very attentive. Now if I could only train him to open the sliding door to our backyard so he could go out by himself on the days I can't get out of bed!

aww, I am so sorry about your little guy. It's always so hard to lose a pet, no matter what their size or type. My dog always knows when I'm getting a nasty migraine and they (dogs and cats) are always there to cuddle up with me.

My pets are my best comfort during my migraine filled life. My pit bull Jacan won't leave my side no matter how long it lasts. Even my cat, who is notorious for screaming till his meals are served, will wait quietly until I can drag myself out of bed, even if it means dinner is hours late.
What type of pet is best is certainly personal and many types of pets are easier to care for than dogs/cats during migraines but for me Jacan is the best, he's been by my side for almost 12 years and has seen me through alot of agony.

Thank you everyone for all the kind thoughts about my hamster. All these comments prove how valuable pets are to our lives! Animals are both our friends and our care givers!

I know what you mean. I have two cats. One is too neurotic to notice my pain, but the other one will lie on the bed near me, but not on me and won't move until I get out of bed. Just listening to his calm, even breathing lowers my pain levels sometimes.

I recently came across your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I don't know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Sorry to hear about your hamster.

The best pets for migraine sufferers are whatever pets they like.

Just found your blog and I'm amazed at how much we think alike. Must be that collective migraine conciousness at work.

Sorry to hear about your hamster. Pets are so wonderful. I have a basset hound, and I think she is the best pet I could have wit my daily migraines. She will lay with me as long as I need her too!

I'm sorry you lost your hamster, it's so heartbreaking losing a sweet family member/pet.

In my experience, my cat was the best pet for my migraines. I would try to get comfortable in my recliner and he would come join me. He would sit on my lap and his breathing would help to regulate my breathing, letting loose some of the panic, and therefore 'snowballing' of my migraine.

I do have to give my sweet 120lb dog credit, though - he came and sat with me (him on the floor next to my chair! LOL) and that does help me feel better, just to have him with me.

Still, though, a cat on my lap - is instant calming for me.
